There can potentially be problems with getting a weight distribution hitch that's greater than what you need.
Sometimes going bigger isn't better, as the frame of your trailer may not be strong enough to support the weight imposed by your spring bars on a weight distribution hitch.
If you're referring to a rear receiver/trailer hitch, you can use a 10,000 lbs. hitch on a 6,000 lbs travel trailer. However, this could make for a stiffer ride, which transfers stress to the trailer's frame causing bouncing or instability.
